History of Hohensalzburg Fortress

Archbishop Gebhard I of Helffenstein built the fortress in 1077 during the Investiture Controversy between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory. After Archbishop Gebhard fled into exile in 1085, his successors completed the castle project. Today, it stands as Europe's largest fortress complex, boasting a built area of over 14.000 m². The fortress has been managed by the State of Salzburg since 1953, though it remains federal property.

The core of the "Hoher Stock" (main building) is still formed by the original Romanesque stone palace. Numerous events bring the fortress, its romantic castle courtyard, and its bastions to life all year round. You can easily reach the fortress via the funicular railway the ride up takes just under a minute.

Preparation for Your Visit:

Put on sturdy shoes and pack warm clothing, as the temperature inside remains below freezing even during the summer. You will be handed mine lamps at the cave entrance, and once inside, magnesium light beautifully illuminates the icy sculptures. Because the cave is a protected natural monument, you may only enter it accompanied by an authorized guide.

Physical Requirements:

During the tour, you will climb a total of 134 meters in elevation comparable to the stairwell of a large skyscraper. However, the sheer beauty of the ice formations makes every bit of effort worthwhile! Since the pace of the tour is adjusted to each individual visitor group, less experienced hikers will manage just fine. That being said, individuals with severe mobility issues or cardiovascular conditions should refrain from taking the tour.
